Bible Reading Plan Overview
Though you could read the Bible start through from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, that’s not the best approach. A chronological reading is ideal.
The problem is a comprehensive chronological reading of the Bible requires a lot of details that won’t fit on a handy sheet.
Because of overlapping sections from different books and repeated passages, some days you would find yourself reading from multiple sections of different passages. Along with being a lot of information to present, that’s too much page flipping and the potential for confusion.
If you want a truly chronological overview of the Bible, get one of the many one-year chronological Bibles. These provide the best and easiest approach.
It’s possible, however, to make an approximate chronological reading guide by putting the books of the Bible in chronological order.
For the Old Testament, the books with an historical narrative of Genesis through Esther (except for 1 and 2 Chronicles) are in chronological order already. All we need to do is insert the rest of the Old Testament books into the right places.
Where to put them, however, is seldom straightforward. We don’t know when some of the minor prophets were written, and scholars debate the dates of others. Compounding the problem, some books, notably Jeremiah and Isaiah, don’t occur chronologically within themselves.
Since David wrote most of the psalms, we’ll include that entire book after the story of his life. Similarly, we attribute Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, and most of Proverbs to King Solomon, so we’ll include those books after we read about him.
Although the books of 1 and 2 Chronicles overlap with 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings, Chronicles wasn’t written until much later. We know this because among the many lists of people, we read those who returned from Babylonian captivity back to the promised land. This occurred in Ezra’s era, and some Bible scholars attribute him as the author of 1 and 2 Chronicles. We’ll present those books accordingly.
(Though not included in this reading plan, the books of the Apocrypha fall between the Old and New Testaments.)
For the New Testament, we’ll start with Mark, which many Bible scholars think was the first Gospel written. Then we’ll go to Matthew. We’ll read Luke next, followed by Acts, which Dr. Luke also wrote.
The narrative of Acts gives us much history of the early church, with the later portions focusing on the travels and ministry of Paul. When it fits, we’ll insert Paul’s letters to the churches (epistles) into the Acts timeline whenever possible.
For the rest of the letters, we’ll read them after Acts, starting with the remaining letters from Paul. Then we’ll read James, 1 and 2 Peter, and Jude, followed by Hebrews.
Since John was the last gospel written, we’ll wrap up with the books attributed to him: John, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Revelation.
This is the overview of our chronological reading plan.
May God speak to you and bless you as you read and study his word this year.
