God Will Restore the Fortunes of the Land
Jeremiah faithfully proclaims God’s words to the people, but he suffers greatly for his steadfast obedience. At one time, he’s confined in the courtyard of the guard. In effect, he’s imprisoned. Yet from this dismal place, Jeremiah gives the people God’s promise of restoration.
While Jeremiah is being detained, the people look about them. There is nothing for them to celebrate. It’s all gloom. The nation’s best days are behind them, and their end looms large.
Their land resembles a desolate wasteland. Where have all the people gone? Where are the animals? The towns throughout Judah are deserted. The same is true for the streets in the city of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is where God’s temple is. Yet its streets are empty. There are few people left to go to God’s temple to praise and worship him, to give him their offerings, or to celebrate his provisions.
Yet this is a temporary condition. Jeremiah looks into the future. Through God’s inspiration, the prophet foretells of the promise of restoration.
What will this be like?
Sounds of joy and gladness will ring forth. People will get married, with the voices of both bride and groom being heard once again. People will bring their offerings to the temple to thank God.
This is what God’s promise of restoration will produce.
At the temple, the people will again praise God as their Lord Almighty. They will again proclaim him as being good. They will again celebrate him because his love never ends; it endures forever.
Why will they act this way? Because God pledges that he will restore their fortunes, just as things were before. It is his promise of restoration
This is most certainly a reason to celebrate.
When we go through difficult times, may we look forward to God’s restoration. And if we turn to him, it will happen. We can count on it.

Peter DeHaan writes about biblical Christianity to confront a status quo faith and live a life that matters. He seeks a fresh approach to following Jesus through the lens of Scripture, without the baggage of made-up traditions and meaningless practices.
