The People’s Song of Praise

Psalm 183 from Beyond Psalm 150

As we move through the book of Isaiah, the prophet offers a future glimpse of Jesus reaching out to embrace people of all nations, not just Israel. In response to this, Isaiah envisions a future people joining to sing this psalm of praise to God:

I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me. Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation . . . .

Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Declare his doings among the peoples! Proclaim that his name is exalted! Sing to Yahweh, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth! Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion; for the Holy One of Israel is great among you!

Reflections on The People’s Song of Praise

Though God’s chosen people thought he was Lord only for their nation, the Old Testament overflows with hints that he intended to save all people.

Do we thank God (Jesus) for our salvation? How can we spread this good news throughout the earth, to all peoples?

May we follow Jesus and be his disciple.
