John Bible Study, Day 32: Jesus Prays for Us

Today’s passage: John 17:20–26

Focus verse: “I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.” (John 17:23)

Jesus’s last prayer has three sections. First, he prays for his mission, its successful completion, and giving God glory. Next, he moves on to pray for his disciples, that they will persevere, and that God will protect them.

Last, he wraps up by praying for his future followers—everyone who will one day believe in him. This third part of his prayer applies to us today.

Jesus prays that we will be one, just as he and his Father are one (John 17:22). Since they exist in perfect harmony with each other, he wants the same agreement from all who follow him. 

We have fallen short of this, far short.

As we congregate with other like-minded believers, we associate with those like us. In doing so, we push aside those who may hold a differing perspective, even though we all follow Jesus, albeit in diverse ways.

The result is we spend our time with people who think, believe, and act as we do. We esteem our own thoughts, beliefs, and actions as best aligned with God. The logical extension is that we assume other viewpoints are wrong—or at least not as good. This creates division.

But division is not what Jesus wants. 

He prays for his followers’ unity, that we would be one just like he and Papa. Our disunity works against Jesus’s prayer for us to get along and act as one. Getting along is a great goal, but why is it so important that we, as Jesus’s followers, live in harmony? 

It’s to maximize the effectiveness of our witness to a watching world. Our unity will best allow others to see Jesus in how we live our lives. That means our disunity works against our witness.

If we can’t get along with one another, does someone on the outside looking in have any motivation to join us?

Our world has plenty of discord. Shouldn’t Jesus’s church be a sanctuary from that? Instead, we disagree and fight as much as the world does, sometimes even more.

Our divisions, denominations, and doctrines send an irrefutable message to the world that the church of Jesus is a splintered, sparring group, unable to get along and unworthy of respect.

Despite our inadequate witness, some people still decide to follow Jesus. How much more effective could our testimony be if everyone got along with one another and functioned as one, just as Jesus prayed we would?

Questions:

  1. Do you believe that Jesus’s prayer in today’s passage is for you? Why?
  2. How much time do you spend with people who don’t think, believe, or act like you?
  3. How can you promote unity among Jesus’s followers? 
  4. What can you do to expand your understanding of Jesus’s church beyond the local branch you attend?
  5. Does Jesus’s prayer for unity apply only to his church or to all religions? Why?

What Are Your Sunday Practices?

Keep the Sabbath Holy and Don’t Do Any Work

In my post God Rested, I talked about the Old Testament command to keep the Sabbath holy and not do any work (Exodus 20:8-11). Yet Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament law, so it doesn’t apply anymore (Matthew 5:17).

However, God rested on the seventh day of creation and declared it holy (Genesis 2:2-3). So, what should our Sunday practices be?

Our Conscience and Our Freedom

My parents taught me not to work on Sunday. It’s a Sunday practice that has stayed with me. Even though I no longer believe I must adhere to it with legalistic zeal, I still mostly do.

I let my conscience guide me. Like Paul, I want to keep my conscience clear (Acts 23:1). And later, in Paul’s teaching about food sacrificed to idols, we get a principle about following our consciences (1 Corinthians 8:1-13). That is what I do.

Yet, I don’t judge anyone whose conscience gives them a different path to follow for their Sunday practices (1 Corinthians 10:29). After all, Jesus gives us freedom (Galatians 5:1).

My key guide in my Sunday practices comes from Jesus. He said the Sabbath—which most people now apply to Sunday—was made for us, not the other way around (Mark 2:27).

Sunday Examples to Consider

For my Sunday practices, which I share only for consideration, I treat it as a set apart day. A holy day, if you will. I want it to be different than the other six days of the week. It’s a special day, that I get to experience once a week.

On this set-apart-day, I go to church with family, enjoy time with them afterward, and do things that give me joy. I don’t do any regular work, but I do pursue activities that relax me. These activities give me a Sabbath rest.

I might watch a limited amount of TV, take a short nap, go for a walk, listen to a podcast, or work on a crossword puzzle.

I also look for a project to do, that although it may look like work, will fill me with joy and provide a sense of accomplishment, fulfilling a personal need I have.

I especially relish when I can immerse myself in God’s creation and worship him through nature. This is often when we connect at the deepest level.

A friend enjoys a Sunday afternoon of weeding in her garden; it is a holy time that draws her to God. A pastor likes to go fishing after Sunday dinner; it gives him rest and helps prepare him for the week ahead.

Though neither of these Sunday practices would work for me, I’m happy it does for them.

Pursue a Sunday Practice

It’s worthwhile for us to consider our creator’s blessing on the seventh day to make it holy, along with his example of rest.

Yet it is up to us to figure out the best way to do it as we develop our own Sunday practices.

Discussion Questions on How to Be an Engaging Church

The experiences I share in this book are my experiences. Others may have different observations. I’m an introvert, as is a slight majority of people.

Even so, I doubt my reactions are unique to me or even to other introverts. 

Consider these fifthteen discussion questions about How to Be an Engaging Church.

1. Whether introvert or extrovert, I’ve never talked with anyone who claimed they could visit a new church without some degree of anxiety.

How can the knowledge that visitors carry some unease better inform our interactions with them?

2. In visiting churches, I had a most supportive wife at my side. With her, I stood much braver than I would have on my own.

Who can we invite to go with us on our spiritual journeys?

3. Visiting a church alone is even harder than going with a friend. It’s easy to see why someone with even the best intentions of visiting will stay home.

Who can we invite to go to church with us?

4. People hold to the Sunday schedule they know—whether staying home or attending church. Maintaining our norm is easier than trying something new.

What do we need to change in our Sunday routine?

5. Churches that want to grow must do everything possible to make it less scary for a visitor to show up. Being welcoming is a start, but there’s more. Churches must be likeable, even irresistible.

How can we become irresistible people? 

Tip 1: Make it Easy for Visitors

Most people today go online to find information about a church they’re thinking of visiting. Therefore, having an attractive, up-to-date, and visitor-friendly website is essential. Don’t make them search. They don’t have much patience.

6. Some churches forego a website and try social media instead. But social media platforms can change their rules, restrict access, and even shut us down.

What impact would our church feel if we lost our social media presence?

7. Our website must be attractive, be easy to navigate, and follow best practices. It needs a makeover every few years to not look dated.

What can we do to improve our church’s website? 

8. Make it easy for prospective visitors to contact our church with questions. This means listing a phone number and email address. Respond quickly to both. Most churches don’t.

How can we help our church be more responsive to visitor questions?

Tip 2: Create a Great Impression

When a visitor arrives at church, create a great first impression, building on their perception that began with our website.

A website may encourage a person to visit a church, but it takes a personal connection to turn one-time visitors into returnees. 

9. Some large churches have parking lot attendants to direct traffic and forward-thinking smaller churches have greeters in their parking lot to welcome visitors and answer questions.

What impression does our church make before people enter the building? 

10. Greet visitors at the building entrance with a smile, welcome them, and open the door. Greeters should focus on people they don’t recognize.

Whether we’re an official greeter or not, what can we do to better welcome visitors?

11. A positive welcome extends inside the building. Regardless of church size, seek ways to assist those who look confused.

What can we do to rescue a visitor who looks lonely or lost?

Tip 3: Greet Well

As mentioned in 52 Churches, there are three opportunities to greet visitors: before the service, during the service, and after the service. Few churches do all three well and too many fail at each one.

12. Pre-service greetings can occur in the parking lot, at the front door, and inside the facility. In addition to official greeters, everyone should take part.

Regardless of how outgoing we are, what can we do to interact with visitors?

13. If there’s a greeting during the service, we must be visitor-focused, not friend-focused. Make eye contact, smile, and offer a handshake. Share our name. Ask theirs. Now introduce them to someone else.

How can we better embrace visitors during the greeting time? 

14. The final greeting occurs after the service. Before visitors scoot out, talk to them. Just be friendly. Seek a connection. Invite them to stay for any after-church activity.

How can we better connect with visitors after the service?

Engaging Church Summary

To grow, a church should engage with visitors. This starts with online information, helping them to decide to visit. It continues by making multiple good impressions when they arrive.

It culminates with greeting them successfully before, during, and after the service.

15. Churches won’t succeed in each area every time, but we should work to succeed in as many as possible, as often as possible.

A Song of Victory

Psalm 155: from Beyond Psalm 150

As God’s people travel through the desert and prepare to take the promised land, they come to the border of the Amorites. They ask King Sihon for permission to travel through the country, promising to stay on the main thoroughfare and not take any of the Amorites’ food or water on the way.

Though this seems like a reasonable request, Sihon refuses. Instead, he rallies his army and attacks the people of Israel as they wait in the desert.

The Israelites defend themselves, and they prevail. They take the land of the Amorites, along with the city of Heshbon, which King Sihon had captured from Moab.

Though the Israelites sought to peacefully travel through the Amorite territory, the king responded negatively, and he started a war. As a result, Israel defeated the Amorite army and took over their land.

In the aftermath of the battle, they sing a song of victory.

“Come to Heshbon.
   Let the city of Sihon be built and established;
for a fire has gone out of Heshbon,
    a flame from the city of Sihon.
It has devoured Ar of Moab,
    The lords of the high places of the Arnon.
Woe to you, Moab!
    You are undone, people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
    and his daughters into captivity,
    to Sihon king of the Amorites.
We have shot at them.
    Heshbon has perished even to Dibon.
We have laid waste even to Nophah,
    Which reaches to Medeba.”

Reflections on A Song of Victory

Though this passage may seem like mere gloating over a military conquest, remember that the Israelites sought a peaceful solution, and the Amorites attacked them. This is a song of deliverance from their enemies.

Though our enemy may not be an attacking army, we all have those who oppose us. We can trust that God will deliver us.

Have we ever sought an honorable solution to a problem and been wrongly attacked anyway? Did we ask God for his intervention? Did we praise him for his answer to our prayers?

May the Holy Spirit guide us to peaceful solutions whenever possible and protect us when peace with others eludes us.

Who is the Son of Man? Jesus or Us?

The phrase son of man occurs in 178 verses in the Bible. Sometimes son is written with an uppercase S and other times with a lowercase s.

When used with an uppercase S, the references are to Jesus, as seen in all four gospels (28 times in Matthew; 13 times in Mark; 25 times in Luke; and 12 times in John). It’s also written this way in Psalm 80:17, Daniel 7:13, and Acts 7:56, again implying Jesus.

Also, we can understand Son of man as a euphemism for Son of God, which occurs 41 times throughout the New Testament and is in all four Gospels, all referencing Jesus.

What’s really interesting is the use of son of man with a lowercase s. It’s used 93 times in the book of Ezekiel, starting with Ezekiel 2:1, as God’s pet name for his prophet. But God also uses this as a name for Daniel (Daniel 8:17).

Three other mentions of son of man are in Hebrews 2:6, Revelation 1:13, and Revelation 14:14, which somewhat seems to straddle these two understandings of the phrase.

So, how can the Son of man refer to Jesus, while son of man refer to people?

The Bride of Christ

Consider that Jesus is the only son of God. We, as his church, are his bride. Therefore, through this spiritual marriage, we also become children of God, that is, sons of God, or to slide back into the euphemism, sons of man.

John Bible Study, Day 31: Jesus Prays

Today’s passage: John 17:1–19

Focus verse: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)

With the time of his arrest drawing near and having given his final teaching to his disciples, Jesus prays. This isn’t a quick, God-help-me prayer. It’s an intentional and fervent outpouring of his heart to his Father in heaven.

This prayer is by far the longest prayer of Jesus recorded in the Bible. As such his words are worthy of our focus. Each phrase is noteworthy, but the key one is eternal life—his reason for coming to earth in the first place.

After Jesus confirms that his purpose is to give people eternal life, he explains what this life everlasting is. Eternal life is knowing his Papa, the one and only true God.

It’s also about knowing Jesus, the Messiah, whom God sent. Since Jesus and the Father are one, knowing God the Father and God the Son produces the same result. It’s a relationship with the God seen throughout Scripture. 

This explanation of eternal life may not be the clarification we want, but it aligns with John’s poetic writing style. It’s noteworthy that John mentions eternal life more than any other biblical writer, with nineteen mentions in John and six more in 1 John.

Eternal life has two phases.

The part of life eternal that we gravitate to most is our forever future with Jesus in heaven. By believing in Jesus and following him here on earth, we secure a future reality for us with him in heaven when our body dies. Our spirit will live on in eternity with Jesus. 

In anticipation, we look forward to this: a new heaven and a new earth (2 Peter 3:13 and Revelation 21:1). At this time, righteousness will rule, which suggests no more sin.

In this idyllic afterlife, there will be no more tears. The threat of death will end. We will not mourn, or cry, or suffer pain. Our memories from earth will fade from our mind (Revelation 21:4).

But eternal life isn’t only about our future. It also addresses our present. To better grasp this, consider what Jesus says about the kingdom of God (kingdom of heaven).

When we say yes to Jesus, eternal life begins at that moment. Though we may not realize it, we live today in the reality of a life eternal. Yes, our experience of eternal life will get better after we die, but we must remember that we’ve already started that journey.

Day by day we move toward perfection through Jesus. That is, God sanctifies us (John 17:19 and 1 Thessalonians 5:23) and perfects us (Hebrews 10:14). This moves us into a fuller realization of eternal life with Jesus (John 4:13–14).

Jesus came to give us eternal life, starting now.

  1. How often do you have an intentional, fervent outpouring to God, like Jesus did in today’s reading?
  2. What can you do to better know God the Father and God the Son?
  3. How well do you do at accepting that eternal life begins here on earth?
  4. What are you doing today to make the most of Jesus’s eternal life? 
  5. What can you do to point others to Jesus?

Secular Christians

Carefully Consider Your Faith Foundation and the Basis for What You Believe

Some Christians base their faith on what the Bible says. Others, however, reject this view as outdated and judgmental. Instead, they allow society to guide their practices, which veers further and further from a firm faith foundation. They have become secular Christians.

Here are some characteristics of secular Christians:

Being Politically Correct Is More Important Than Being Biblically Correct

Political correctness guides their perspectives, their thoughts, and their words. When this view contradicts what the Bible says, they dismiss Scripture and align with the current prevailing opinion of secular society.

Public opinion matters more to them than God’s Word, so they waffle in the wind of societal attitudes. And when that attitude shifts, they shift with it. As a result, they build their life on a foundation of sand. What they don’t realize is that it won’t last (Matthew 7:26).

Jesus Isn’t Central but Ancillary

Jesus is the star of the Bible, with the Old Testament anticipating him and the New Testament telling us about him and the work of his followers. He calls his disciples to put him first in their lives, to make him a priority (Matthew 10:38).

Yet secular Christians move away from this ideal. Yes, they may view Jesus as a wise teacher, a good man, or someone worthy of admiration, but he’s not someone to give their life to. As a result, Jesus becomes one pursuit among many. He doesn’t rise above all else. Instead, he’s more apt to be buried by it.

Society’s Views Supersede Scripture

Sometimes what the Bible says isn’t popular among progressive thinking people. When they read Scripture—if they read it at all—it’s as if they have a highlighter in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other. But this is Christian idolatry. They don’t read and believe the entire Bible (2 Timothy 3:16).

When the Bible agrees with what society says, secular Christians affirm Scripture. But when it runs contrary to popular opinion, they dismiss or decry those passages.

At best, secular Christians view the Bible through the lens of culture. In the process, they distort the Word of God and delude themselves into assuming it says something it doesn’t say.

Christian Is a Label More Than a Lifestyle

Given this, it’s easy for these folks to treat the word Christian as a name that carries little weight. It may encompass a political perspective, a vague reference that means whatever they want it to mean, or a convenient description that allows for acceptance among some groups.

Instead, Jesus calls us to go all in for him (Matthew 19:29). To fully follow him is a full-time commitment. We make a U-turn with our lives to be his disciple. Saying we’re a Christian means nothing unless our lifestyle matches what Jesus calls us to do.

Don’t Be a Secular Christian

Just because someone says they’re a Christian doesn’t mean they really are. Too many people in our world today are secular Christians and nothing more. But Jesus has a higher calling for us (Hebrews 3:1).

Peter DeHaan Now on Substack

Prolific Author Expands Access

Author Peter DeHaan announced he is now on Substack. Substack is an online resource that “lets independent writers and podcasters publish directly to their audience.”

Author Peter DeHaan writes about biblical Christianity

“My website will remain the hub of my online presence,” DeHaan said, “and Substack will both extend and support that effort.” Though Peter has a presence on many social media sites, they are primarily to point to his website, PeterDeHaan.com. This will remain unchanged.

Substack, however, is much more than a social media platform, which is why Peter decided to use it, while he has passed on having a presence on other online destinations.

Presently his weekly newsletter is available on Substack, which supporters can read online, through an RSS feed, or via email. It is available through a free subscription.

This will not replace Peter’s existing newsletter, but work in conjunction with it.

There is also an option to support Peter’s work by being a paid subscriber. He views his writing as a ministry, and over the years, some people have wanted to financially support his outreach, even though it is not a nonprofit and monies given are not tax deductible.

The optional support opportunity is $5 a month or $50 a year. These funds will help him continue to write and publish more books. “I don’t expect people to become paid subscribers,” Peter added, “but it will be a pleasant bonus for those who feel led to do so.

Many people use Substack and appreciate its ease of use, along with the lack of advertising in a more civil and safe online destination.

“I am so excited about Substack and the potential it offers to effectively connect with more people.” Peter said.

How to Be an Engaging Church

The experiences I share in my book are just that: my experiences. Other people will have different observations when visiting a church.

I am an introvert, as is a slight majority of the population, but my reactions are not unique to or representative of introverts.

Indeed, everyone, both introvert and extrovert, will share my perspective to varying degrees—some more profoundly and others less so.

Regardless, know that I have never talked with anyone who claimed they could visit a new church without some degree of anxiety.

Also know that I had a most supportive wife accompanying me each week (except for the week she was out of town and I went solo: Church #61, “The Wrong Time to Visit”).

With her at my side, I stood much braver than I would have on my own.

Even so, I had to fight the urge to make a U-turn in the parking lot at Church #54 (“Emergent Maybe”) and pray earnestly to stave off a bit of a panic attack while walking into Church #58 (“Not So Friendly”).

Visiting a church with a non-supportive spouse would be even harder, as well as showing up by yourself. Given all this, it’s easy to see why someone with even the best intentions of visiting a church will decide not to.

Instead, they’ll maintain their Sunday morning status quo—whether staying home or attending the church they know, even if it’s the wrong one.

Sticking with what we’re used to is so much easier than confronting our fears and going someplace unknown.

That’s why it’s so critical for a church to do everything possible to make it less scary for a visitor to show up. Being a welcoming church is a great start, but it’s not enough.

Churches need to go beyond welcoming visitors. They need to engage with them. You must be a disarming church, likeable, even irresistible. 

There are many factors that make a church engaging. Three recurring themes emerged from our visits to other churches. These stand out as essential skills to master.

Make it Easy for Visitors

Most people today go online to find information. This includes someone thinking about visiting your church. Therefore, having an attractive, up-to-date, and visitor-friendly website is key. 

A few churches try to skip this step by establishing their online home base on various social media sites. This, however, is shortsighted.

Social media platforms can change their rules of engagement at any time, restrict who sees your information, and even summarily shut you down without notice.

Yes, a church can still have social media pages, but these should direct visitors to the church website, which the church owns and controls.

As mentioned, the website must be attractive. It should look current and be easy to navigate. It must follow best practices.

This means your website needs a makeover every couple of years, or else it will look dated, which will cause visitors to dismiss your church as out of touch.

Next, your website needs current information. Remove obsolete content and add new info as soon as changes occur.

Nothing will cause website visitors to bounce from your site faster—and dismiss your church quicker—than when it includes information that’s no longer relevant. 

A third key is accuracy. Some church websites are as misleading as dating profiles. (Not that I have any firsthand experience with dating websites, but I’ve heard that embellished claims abound).

Some church websites paint a picture of what the church once was but no longer is, while other sites present an image of what they want to become. Both are lies and seriously mislead visitors, which results in disappointment.

This causes first-time church visitors to become one-time visitors.

As far as the specific information a website should have, clear and easy to find service times are critical. Don’t make people search for this or wonder if what they find is accurate. 

Just as important is your street address. Unless your location is well known and highly visible, assume visitors will use their GPS to get there. Make it easy for them to do so.

Next, people will wonder what they should wear to feel comfortable at your church. And even if you don’t care what they wear, they will.

They’ll want to fit in, so let them know how most people dress. Is your church come-as-you-are, business casual, or Sunday best? Somewhere in between?

If you have multiple services, note the times. Highlight any differences, such as in format, music content, and sermon style. Also note any other Sunday programming you may offer.

Do you have Sunday school? Is it concurrent to the service or at a different time? Do you have something separate for teens? What about college students or young singles? These are two demographics that many churches overlook.

Let newcomers know what to expect. Beyond explaining a typical service, tell them what they can encounter before and after.

Let them know how long the service typically lasts. And please, tell them the offering is just for members and regular attendees. 

You should also explain your communion practices, since these vary a lot from one church to another.

At most of the churches we visited that included communion, my desire to understand and fit in with their practices so distracted me that I failed to focus on the reason why I was taking communion. This was an epic fail for me—and for them.

Lastly, make it easy for prospective visitors to contact your church with questions. This includes listing your phone number and email address.

Just make sure you respond quickly to both. Most churches don’t, with a few delaying their response to visitor communication for days, weeks, and, in one case, even months. And some don’t respond at all.

What I’ve not included on this list of website information is a doctrinal statement.

I don’t think most people care, and those who read it may seek one hot-button word or phrase, using it to eliminate your church from further consideration.

The reality is that at most churches, the people who go there don’t know what their church’s core beliefs are, and those who do know, often disagree with an element or two.

Create a Great Impression

Okay, so your website did a good enough job to entice someone to visit your church. Now you need to make a great impression when they arrive, knowing that their first perception of your church began with your website.

You’ve given them your street address, so their GPS will get them to your facility.

If you only have one entrance to your parking lot, they’ll know where to go, but if you have multiple entrances, be sure to have signs, banners, or flags directing them to the right one.

Some large churches have parking lot attendants to direct traffic to open spaces, but even some forward-thinking mid-sized churches have greeters in their parking lot to welcome visitors and be available to answer questions.

You must have someone greet them at your building entrance to give them a smile, welcome them well, and open the door. This person should focus on people they don’t recognize and not their friends.

This greeter should look for signs of apprehension or confusion, doing whatever they can to ease a visitor’s concerns or fears.

A positive welcome, however, extends inside the building too. Larger churches have visible and attractive information centers, staffed by approachable and outgoing people to assist visitors in any way possible.

At smaller churches, or those lacking the space for a visitor center, station people inside to assist those who look lost or confused.

In all this, the goal is to make a great impression, welcoming visitors well and helping them enjoy their experience.

Greet Well

As I mentioned in 52 Churches, there are three opportunities to greet visitors: before the service, during the service, and after the service. Few churches do all three well. And too many fail at each one.

As already mentioned, the pre-service greeting occurs in the parking lot, at the front door, and inside your facility. But that’s not enough.

These people serve as official greeters because they’re outgoing, engaging, and have a knack at helping people feel comfortable.

However, this doesn’t mean the other 99 percent of your church shouldn’t also greet visitors. 

The pre-church greeting extends into the sanctuary or worship space. This secondary form of greeting could be as simple as making eye contact, smiling, and waving or saying hello. Anyone should be able to do that.

Beyond that, everyone should look for people standing by themselves with no one to talk to or who look lost. Talking with friends should always take second place to interacting with visitors.

And remember, most visitors won’t care if someone’s approach may be a bit awkward. They’ll just be thrilled that someone cared enough to try.

For stoic churches, a nod of acknowledgment may be all you can do, while for more outgoing churches, the time before the service is a great opportunity to get to know someone.

You can even offer to sit with them during the service to help them feel more comfortable and better navigate the service. This is extremely important for churches with liturgical services, which are hard for most visitors to follow.

Next is the greeting during the service. From a visitor perspective, most churches do this so poorly they might be better off skipping it. Seriously. 

If you do have a greeting time during the service, train your people to be visitor-focused, not friend-focused. Give visitors the bulk of your attention.

Make eye contact, smile, and offer a handshake. Share your name. Ask theirs. Now introduce them to someone else. And whatever you do, don’t allow visitors to squirm in silence while everyone else is talking with others. 

Don’t call out visitors by having them raise their hand, or worse, stand up. This is most embarrassing. Instead, invite them to go to the back of the sanctuary or visitor center after the service.

The final greeting occurs after the service ends. It’s true that some visitors scoot out as quickly as possible—especially if they had a bad experience—but other visitors may be open to tarry. Reward them for their bravery by talking to them.

At the same time, don’t overwhelm or interrogate them, just be friendly. Seek to establish a connection. If there’s any after-church activity, invite them to stay for it.

This may be coffee and refreshments. Or it could be a potluck. Assure them there will be plenty of food and that they’re welcome to stay.

Ask them if they have any questions. If you don’t know the answer, take them to someone else who will be able to help.

Though not as common as it once was, you can invite them to have lunch with you.

Even if your church failed at the pre-church greeting and the mid-service greeting, a good post-church greeting can still salvage the situation, serving as a final and positive impression for them to take home.

Good worship music and engaging preaching may draw visitors, but it’s the human connection that keeps them coming back. This starts with greeting visitors well.

Be an Engaging Church Summary

If you want your church to grow—and every church should—strive to engage with visitors.

This starts with the information you provide online, which should make it easy for them to decide to visit. It continues by making multiple good impressions when they arrive at your facility.

Then it culminates with greeting them well before, during, and after the service.

You won’t succeed in each of these areas every time, but you should work to succeed in as many of them as possible, as often as possible.

The Nation Sings

Psalm 154 from Beyond Psalm 150

As the people of Israel travel about in the desert, water is scarce. They reach the city of Beer. God instructs Moses to gather the people, and he will provide water to quench their thirst.

The people respond collectively, praising God in song. Though this seems like a poem to the well that produced the water, let’s understand this as an indirect praise to God for guiding them to the water that the well provided.

All praise rightly goes to God, from whom all blessings flow—including water.

“Spring up, well! Sing to it,

    the well, which the princes dug,

    which the nobles of the people dug,

    with the scepter, and with their poles.”

Reflection The Nation Sings

When might we have directed our appreciation for something God provided to the wrong source?

Roughly one billion people in our world today lack access to clean, drinkable water. The rest of us seldom give water a thought. What can we do to thank Yahweh for his life-giving water? What can we do to help those who are thirsty?

May we give water to thirsty people in Jesus’s name (Matthew 10:42).
