Hushai is an Arkite. The Bible tells us little about the Arkites, other than that they descend from Noah’s grandson Canaan. This makes Hushai a foreigner in Israel, a non-Jew. Yet he is also loyal to King David, serving as his confidant.
When Absalom attempts a coup against David, the king flees for his life. Hushai aligns with David and intends to leave with him. Yet David has a different idea.
He sends Hushai back to advise Absalom, with the plan to give poor advice and thwart the recommendations of Absalom’s other adviser, Ahithophel.
Though this is at significant personal risk should Absalom learn of his covert activities, Hushai does as David requests.
Not only does Hushai successfully thwart the advice given to Absalom by Ahithophel, but he also sends reports back to King David about Absalom’s plans.
As a result of Hushai’s bold actions, David escapes Absalom’s grasp and later reclaims his throne.
How loyal are we to our leaders?
How willing are we to take a personal risk to do something daring?
