Consider What Scripture Says about the Unborn
Some say life begins at birth. Others point to conception. Yet too many look at the continuum of pregnancy and try to determine a point along that path where not-life becomes life. But this looms as a never-ending quest with an ever-moving answer.
What does the Bible say about when life begins?
King David
David celebrated God for creating the deepest, most intimate parts of who he was. This began in his mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). This is when his life began—not at birth but at conception.
The Creator created him through the process of gestation, which our Lord also designed. This is the miracle of life.
John the Baptist
The life of John the Baptist likewise began before his birth. At about six months into her pregnancy, mother Elizabeth heard Mary speak. Not-yet-born John leapt for joy inside her womb.
Even before his birth, he possessed an awareness of what was happening outside his uterine environment (Luke 1:41).
In addition to delighting Elizabeth and confirming John’s awareness of what was happening outside his mother’s womb, I’m sure his pre-born gymnastics surprised his mother—and likely caused discomfort.
Paul
In writing to the church in Galatia, Paul also confirmed God’s hand in his life before he was born. Paul testified that God chose him while still in his mother’s womb. At that time God called him and ordained him to tell the Gentiles about Jesus (Galatians 1:15-16).
Though it would be years later before Paul actually responded to God’s call, the Almighty sat this in motion before Paul’s birth.
Jacob and Esau
Paul also talked about Jacob and Esau. After their conception, but before the twins were born, God determined their path (Romans 9:10-11).
Their life had meaning—and consequences—prior to their birth (Genesis 25:19-26).
The Beginning of Life
Through Scripture we see God at work in David, John, Paul, and twins Jacob and Esau prior to their birth. That is when their life begins. Once conceived, God moved to prepare them for their future.
Though their births marked their entrance into our world, their lives had already begun.
If God played a part in their formation then, he surely does so for us today.
God values the unborn and so should we.
